Graduate Education

The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) has a rich history of nurturing scientific talent, beginning with graduate students under the mentorship of the renowned Dr. Eugene Odum. Since 1985, our graduate students have distinguished themselves, winning over 200 awards at international, national, and regional scientific events. This legacy of excellence is a testament to their outstanding potential, with many alumni pursuing successful careers in various scientific fields.

While SREL primarily collaborates with the University of Georgia, our graduate program extends opportunities to visiting students from other esteemed institutions. This inclusive approach enriches our research community, bringing diverse perspectives and expertise to the study of ecological and environmental sciences. Graduate students at SREL enjoy the unique privilege of conducting research at the Savannah River Site, under the guidance of both SREL faculty and their respective home institutions. This collaborative environment fosters a blend of academic rigor and practical experience, preparing students for impactful careers in science.

Students who pursue graduate research at SREL must be enrolled in a department or school at the University of Georgia. The student’s place of enrollment will be determined by the privileges of the faculty advisor. Please note that admission requirements vary by department and school.
