Lauren Cameron joined SREL as a Graduate Research Assistant in June after obtaining his B.S. in forest resources with a focus on water and soil resources from the Warnell School at the University of Georgia. As an undergraduate, Lauren gained experience working as a lab assistant helping a Ph.D. student collect biometric data in a pine forest and later participated in an internship in the “Birds Eye View of Climate Change” program. He also gave back to the community by volunteering to tutor underprivileged children in the Athens area in math and English. His academic success earned him the Knox and Kathryn Memorial Scholarship award in 2012 as well as recognition as a UGA Amazing Student highlighted on the UGA webpage. Lauren is now pursuing an M.S. in Natural Recourses at Warnell and will be work with Gary Mills. His thesis will focus on determining the distribution, bioavailability, and benthic flux of copper, zinc, and mercury in sediments in constructed wetlands on the SRS.
